Since then, Brunei was renowned for its monarchical government. ![]() The leadership of the reigning sultans enabled Brunei to defend its sovereignty as an Islamic Malay Monarchy since Awang Alak Betatar converted to Islam in 1368. The era of Malay Sultanate of Brunei was an important starting point in the history of Brunei Darussalam.
